SAWS 9 Workshop- Wx for Aviators & Controllers (Nov 5-6, 2021)

SAWS 9 Workshop Albuquerque Nov 2021

For Aviators and Controllers (free admission), the ninth annual "Southwest Aviation Weather Safety Workshop" (SAWS) returns to Albuquerque.
Friday evening social dinner and all day Saturday workshop, especially focused for pilots.  Friday focus is for weather geeks.  Monitor SAWS website for details:  https://www.weather.gov/psr/saws

Please join the National Weather Service as we bring together the Southwest US aviation and weather forecasting communities to promote aviation safety and productivity through improved weather awareness and forecasting services. This event will be free of charge and will consist of:

  • Aviation Weather Forecasting Workshop (Friday, November 5th, 2021) - The first day of the workshop will focus on meeting the needs of Aviation Weather Forecasters. It will feature best practices in aviation weather forecasting, infusing new technology into the forecast process, customer needs, and discussions on weather service innovation. Pilots are welcome on this day to the extent they would like to participate, and we will appreciate their insights in discussions. We also anticipate FAA Safety Team participation.
  • Happy Hour and Social Dinner (Friday Night) - Everyone with an interest in southwest US aviation and aviation weather services is welcome to join us for a casual evening of networking and relationship building. We will choose a restaurant within walking distance of the hotel and conference center hosting the workshop. Spouses will also be welcome.
  • Aviator and Controller Weather Workshop (Saturday, November 6th, 2021) - The second day of the workshop will focus on meeting aviator and air traffic controller needs for weather safety information, including presentations on aviation weather hazard recognition, mitigation, and avoidance; as well as tips on how to effectively use and understand aviation weather data, products, and websites. We are working closely with the FAA Safety Team to secure WINGS credit for those who are interested.
  • Group Tour of ARTCC and WFO ABQ (Saturday Evening) - We are hoping to arrange optional tours of the Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center and their Center Weather Service Unit, as well as the NWS Weather Forecast Office in Albuquerque. This is a rare opportunity to see aviation forecasting and air traffic control in practice.

A block of rooms will be set aside by the Sheraton Albuquerque Uptown at the US Government per diem rate of $111 per night. The Albuquerque Meals and Incidentals Rate is $71 per day. There are numerous dining and shopping options within walking distance of the hotel and conference center, so a rental car will not be needed. Ride service fare from/to the Albuquerque International Sunport should cost about $25 one way. We also encourage aviation and/or weather professionals to submit standup or poster presentation proposals once our Call for Presentations is released on May 20th.
