Weird and Scenic NM, #12 Laguna del Perro

East of Estancia is a 16 mile chain of dried lake beds, oriented north/south. Most of the time they are dry, but during the summer monsoon season they have a thin layer of water which create a mirror like surface. These lakes are spectacular to view from the air. There are dozens of depressions, resembling craters which make you imagine you are flying over the surface of the moon. Do not attempt any landing on these lakes. The surface is just a thin layer of salt, covering a black pool of slime you don't want your plane to get anywhere near. The "craters" are fun to explore from the air, one has the remnants of a resort hotel, which had seen better times.

Laguana del Perro is the remnant of a huge ice age lake that was approximately 40 miles long and 20 miles wide, and would cover Estancia to a depth of 100 ft.

Estancia has a dirt airstrip that is in good condition. If you land and follow the path into town, there is a nice restaurant called "The Old Mill" on the right side.
