AOPA Nontowered Case Studies: What went wrong
January 26, 2017

Sheraton Albuquerque Airport Hotel
KABQ
Albuquerque, NM

7:00 - 9:00 pm Flying at nontowered fields is a balancing act. Especially on busy days, it demands concentration, communication, sharp eyes, solid stick-and-rudder skills, and the ability to improvise at a moments notice. Sometimes the margin for error can be very slim.

With that in mind, ASIs new seminar turns a spotlight on real-life accidents in the nontowered environment. Together with our expert presenters, youll play the role of accident investigator to figure out what went wrong and why.

Sheraton Albuquerque Airport Hotel;2910 Yale Blvd SE

Albuquerque, NM

7 - 9pm Registration encouraged but not required. To RSVP, use website link below.(There is no pre-registration on FAA system)

We spend time training for them, but real-world emergencies are rare enough that its easy to get complacent. They dont always happen to other pilots, though, and preparation can make a big difference when things dont go as planned:
- What if you lose 500 rpm during takeoff, but the engine is running smoothly?
- What if the ammeter drops to zero during a flight in IMC?
- What if your left aileron develops a strong vibration in flight?
Our new seminar is full of expert tips on handling those up here, but wishing you were down there scenarios. We focus on how to keep abnormal situations from becoming full-blown emergencies, offer advice on keeping critical problems under control, and give our best advice on off-airport landings.

Thunder over Moriarty - Nemisis Air Racing
September 21 thru October 3, 2015

Moriarty Airport
0E0
Moriarty, NM

Look to the Journal and listen to KXNM (88.7) for exact time and date for this attempt at several records, September 21 through
October 3 2015.

The NemesisNXT and its team's goal, is an assault on the record book that will highlight 3 different speed distances, in two different weight categories, for a total of 6 world records at the
event in Moriarty. No one has ever attempted six Speed records at one event, and the highly decorated team will be pushed to by the Federation Aeronautic' Internationale (FAI), the keepers of aviation speed, altitude, and distance records world wide.

The speed records on the schedule to be challenged are in the NAA/FAI weight categories C1b (1,102 - 2,205 pounds)and Category C1c (2,205-3,858 pounds).

The record distances will be 3km, 15km, and 100km in length. The 3 km speed attempts are an average of 4 passes that must be flown inside a very controlled window of altitude and width within 200 feet of the ground. The 3km is considered the ultimate record for aircraft due to the tight constraints of the flight. It is also a very exciting event to watch due to the close proximity to the airport, with the plane in your face, but don't blink, 'cause the NemesisNXT will be gone if you do. Also, the incredible sound this aircraft makes has never been heard outside of the Reno Air Races and might never be heard again after this event. The current record in the 2 weight categories is in the 380 mph range. The Nemesis NXT has been clocked at the Reno Air Races at speeds well into the 400's.

The Team invites everyone to come out to the Moriarty, NM airport to see and hear the NemesisNXT try to make history and add to its long list of accomplishments.

CANCELLED due to recent rains. Airstrip is too muddy!

The New Mexico Pilots Association Backcountry Flyers will be having a fly-in to Candy Kitchen on Saturday, 19 July, from 0800 to 1100, graciously hosted by the strip's owner Mr. Joe Neas and his friend Ruth Ann. The NWS is thrilled to announce our fourth annual aviation weather workshop for pilots and other aviation specialists. This year's series of talks will focus on techniques and tips for the boundary layer...the part of the atmosphere closest to the surface and thus most critical to flight operations. In addition, we will offer a virtual tour of the WSR-88D radar. So, if you ever wondered what was up in that golf ball at KLBB airport, here's where to find out! Tours of the Lubbock NWS office will be available after the presentations to US citizens. Foreign nationals are also welcome to attend the tour, but will need to arrange for proper clearance by January 10th.

Rescheduled - Negrito Fly In (NMPA Event)
Lecture Flying the Lindbergh Line
October 3, 2013

Albuquerque History MuseumAlbuquerque, NM

There will be a presentation at the Albuquerque History Museum on Thursday, October 3 at
7 PM by author Robert Kirk that will describe the first transcontinental airline service between New York and California. This historic event in aviation history used New Mexico as a pivotal location for two of the ten stops along the way in 1929. It was this fledgling air service, referred to as "The Lindbergh Line", because of the involvement of Charles Lindbergh in defining the route, that was the forerunner of TWA.
The author will sign copies of his book "Flying the Lindbergh Line-- Then and Now" following the presentation. This is a great opportunity to become more acquainted with this historic event and the involvement of New Mexico and Albuquerque in particular. The session is being hosted by the Albuquerque Aviation History Group
Mr. Kirk holds a Ph.D. and is a decorated pilot who flew F-4D Phantoms in Vietnam as well as being a CFI.
The Albuquerque Museum is located at 2000 Mountain Road NW, at the intersection of Mountain Road and 19th Street, directly west of Tiguex Park in the area of Albuquerque known as "Old Town."

5th Southwest Aviation Weather Safety Workshop
June 19, 2013

WEBINAR

Registration is now open for the fifth Southwest Aviation Weather Safety (SAWS V) Workshop, which will take place as a free webinar on June 19th.
The purpose of SAWS Workshops is to promote aviation safety and productivity through improved weather awareness and forecasting services. We had to convert from our traditional, in-person format to a virtual workshop this time, due to the Federal budget sequestration. And, we look forward to bringing together a broader cross section of the Southwest US aviation and meteorology communities as a result.
Now you can participate in the workshop just as well as everyone else! Pilots can earn 3.0 FAA WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program credits by participating in the Aviator & Controller Weather Workshop from 1225-4 PM PDT.
Our valued aviation customers and partners are also welcome to join weather forecasters for the Aviation Weather Forecasting Workshop from 8 -1150 AM PDT, but WINGS credit will not be awarded for these presentations.
To see our informative flyer, tentative agenda and to register, please go to http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/psr/SAWS5. Get the most out of this workshop by watching all or part of it with weather forecasters at the National Weather Service Albuquerque Forecast Office. When the Aviator & Controller Weather Workshop ends, I'll provide a tour of our weather station and give you the opportunity to watch the afternoon weather balloon launch.
Please reserve your spot in advance by contacting David Craft at: david.craft@noaa.gov or 505-243-0702 ext 0. If you have further questions, please contact David.

Fly Out - Santa Fe

Aviation Association of Santa Fe
KSAF
Santa Fe, NM

Hello Santa Fe Area Pilots!

Spring's right around the corner, the temperature has warmed, the winds haven't kicked in too bad yet, so it's time to FLY! So, let's get to it:

The Aviation Association of Santa Fe will be holding our first "Fly Out" of the season next Saturday, Feb. 9, 2013. We'll be flying to Grants, NM, which has a new museum dedicated to the old Airway Beacon navigation system of the 1920s. It's a fascinating aviation history story, and the exhibit includes lots of artifacts from the period. (Grants was on a major Albuquerque to Los Angeles airway used by Ford Tri-Motors in the first transcontinental airline route.)

We are currently trying to match up pilots, passengers and airplanes. If you're interested in making this leisurely 1-hr. flight with our group, please email info@santafeaviation.org. Let us know if you have a plane or you need a ride. The plan is to meet at the Santa Fe Airport Grill at 8am for breakfast and a preflight briefing, with a scheduled 9am departure. We expect to be back in Santa Fe at approximately 2pm. We hope you'll join us!

Let's Go Flying!

NMPA Negrito Work Party POSTPONED DUE TO FIRES (NMPA Event)
2nd Annual Rocky Mountain Light Sport Aircraft Expo
May 19 thru  20, 2012

Front Range Airport
KFTG
Denver, CO

The Colorado Pilots Association presents the RMLSAExpo as both a flyin and an opportunity to interest the general public in flying.

Yes, the highlight will be LSAs, E-LSAs, ultralights & weight-shift, but it's a great opportunity for a flyin, too!
FTG sits in a SE corner of Denver International (DEN) Class B but it really is easy and no reason to stay away.
We'll have details on the website but quite simply, either be on flight following or call 30 nm out to Denver Approach and they'll bring you in without any problems (Mode C veil).

FTG has 2 8000 ft runways in an L shape so unless the weather is horrendously windy, there's always easy landing.
Discount fuel for those flying in (right now, FTG and APA have the cheapest fuel in the state!)

Hangar space available if weather turns into hail so don't worry about that, either.

Southwest Aviation Weather Safety (SAWS IV) Workshop
October 25 thru  26, 2011

Marriott Hotel in uptown Albuquerque, 2101 Louisiana Blvd .

Albuquerque, NM

NOTE: With the government budget cuts, it's not clear if there will be another workshop or where it will be held. If there is another workshop, it is very unlikely that it will be in New Mexico, so this is a precious opportunity for our pilots and those in neighboring states.

The fourth Southwest Aviation Weather Safety (SAWS IV) Workshop is finally coming to Albuquerque on October 25th and 26th, 2011. The purpose of this free workshop is to promote aviation safety and productivity through improved weather awareness and forecasting services. It is being brought to New Mexico by the Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center Weather Service Unit, and the National Weather Service Forecast Offices in Albuquerque and Phoenix.

October 25th will feature an Aviator and Controller Weather Workshop with a day of aviation weather hazards presentations and an optional tour of the Albuquerque Air Route Traffic Control Center. We are working with the FAA Safety Team to make this safety-of-flight event highly relevant for GA, commercial, and military pilots, as well as Air Route Traffic Control Center and Air Traffic Control Tower Controllers.
Presenters from multiple National Weather Service Forecast Offices will be joined by guests from the FAA Safety Team, Aviation Weather Center, Arizona Pilots Association, Sunshine Safety Studies, US Air Force, and probably the Lockheed Martin AFSS Program. FAA WINGS Pilot Proficiency Program credit will be granted for interested pilots who participate on this day.

October 26th will feature an Aviation Weather Forecasting Workshop with a day of activities designed to help weather forecasters better meet the needs of their National Aerospace System customers and partners. If possible, pilots and controllers are encouraged to participate in discussions on this day to help us understand how weather impacts their operations, as well as how we can improve our services and the delivery of our products.

In addition, this workshop will provide a great opportunity to make contacts and build relationships within the Southwest US aviation and weather forecasting communities. Optional hot lunch buffets in the workshop venue and a casual social dinner across the street will create ample opportunities to make new acquaintances and further develop old ones. WORKSHOP REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS October 21st. Hotel Reservation deadline is October 10th.

MOUNTAIN FLYING - HIGH ELEVATION AIRPORT OPERATIONS GROUND SCHOOL
June 18, 2011

Rocky Mtn Metro Airport
BJC
Broomfield, CO

Offered June 18 and Sept 10, 2011 The ground school course was originally developed by the Colorado Pilots Association in 1986. It is taught by Colorado pilots who live and fly the mountains in business and recreational flying. Through the years it has evolved into one of the premier safety training courses of its kind.

The course takes the student on a simulated flight over several mountain passes and into a number of high elevation mountain airports. Instructors take time to discuss factors affecting the safety of flight at each step on the route and make extensive use of aerial photography and a technical workbook to illustrate information needed for a safe flight. The workbook is part of the course materials provided under the registration fee for the course.
It also prepares a pilot for the optional mountain cross-country training flight in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. $200 for non-CPA members.
